Hello world, blog version

Hello world, blog version

TL;DR

Hi people, this the first post of my new blog.
I named it `Hello world`, because I'm basically using it to
try [jekyllbootstrap](http://jekyllbootstrap.com/) features.

What I’m doing in this post

I’m writing this post while I improve the blog status, so I’ll include:

  • some review of jekyllbootstrap (JB from now) and the step I’m doing to configure it
  • some explanation of what I’ll write in this blog
  • some presentation about myself

So, start with the first point…

About JB:

I start following the quick-start step by step. It was really easy to get started, the tutorial promise 3 minutes to be up and running, but it’s been really a question of some seconds…

But…

Some minutes later, I received an e-mail from GH, stating this:

The page build completed successfully, but returned the following warning:

Your site is using Maruku, the default Markdown interpreter. Maruku is now obsolete and may cause builds to fail for sites with invalid Markdown or HTML. See https://help.github.com/articles/migrating-your-pages-site-from-maruku for more information on upgrading to a newer Markdown interpreter.

For information on troubleshooting Jekyll see:

  https://help.github.com/articles/using-jekyll-with-pages#troubleshooting

If you have any questions please contact us at https://github.com/contact.

And gosh… I receive the same e-mail each time I publish a change to the post…

So I now start to migrate my-pages-site-from-maruku as suggested.

The upgrade appear to be very simple:

I just changed _config.yml file, adding following line at the root level:

markdown: kramdown

and I’m now no more receiving e-mails as I push changes…

Interlude: about me

I’m not an english native speaker, so please pardon my english if it’ll become to error prone…

By the way:

  1. I hope to improve it by writing this blog
  2. I hope to that JB has a way to setup a grammatical correction tool

Back to JB

Ok, let’s continue improving the basic blog layout

Second step: I wish to improve the layout, because there is by default an annoyng AROUND THE WEB section above my post.

Ok, it appear to be a Disqus features. I read about it on Disqus site and maybe it will be useful to atract traffic on my pages…

So, I’ll continue by changing the blog theme

JB come with some predefined simple themes, but it’s possible to install new ones, as explained here

I quickly look at themes explorer to choose one. I really like the-program theme. Installing it is a matter of seconds:

I just click on Install Theme on the explorer page, and run on my terminal the suggested rake command:

rake theme:install git="https://github.com/jekyllbootstrap/theme-the-program.git"

The command clone the theme repository under my themes folder from GH, ask me if I want to switch theme now (Yes, I wanted). I git add newly added content, commit, and push.

Voila, new theme online. Really better than the default JB one.

Remove examples section.

In my blog, there is now two posts: this one, that I’ll keep, and a sampe post, that I find to be annoying, so I’ll remove it.

I just delete core-samples folder, commit and push, and the post is gone. Thery easy.

Enabling comments.

Comments are an important part of each blog, so I’m proceding by enabling them as explained here

There are some different provider to choose for comments management. I really like Disqus, so I configure it. First, I create a Disqus account, once done, it was a matter of writing my account name in _config.yml file under comments.disqus key.

Change domain name

It’s now time to publish the blog on my new domain: parro.it I’ll follow the GH tutorial on the topic

This is the trickiest part till now. COnfigure the www host was easy, but I cannot make the http://parro.it work.

So, by now the www is pretty fine… let’s proceed with

Analytics configuration

This step is very easy. I just wrote my Google analytics UID under analytics.google.tracking_id key in _config.yml file.

My info

Finally, I setup my blog info, always in _config.yml file, under keys author, title and tagline and done some clean-up of home page, editing file index.md.

Conclusion

Within some hours of work, I’ve been able to setup a decent new blog, and to write a somehow long first post… JB was really helpful and practical.

Now, as I said, some word about me, what I do and what I’ll write here. I’ll try to be syntetic, because it’s now late night
